CALCUTTA AND POINT TO POINT
- It may seem early to be thinking about these
end-of-season events, but the meadowlarks may sing before the
next newsletter appears. For the uninitiated, the Calcutta
(April 13) is the gala party where we get to bet large sums on
our favorite teams competing
in the Point to Point (April 26) competitions. The
betting system is unique and a little confusing, but seminars
will be offered in the ensuing
months. The Calcutta is a major fund raiser for the Hunt,
so all money invested is well-spent. However, the odds are good
and some of us will win large purses. If your spouse frowns on
high roller dollar bets, start hiding the money now, or set up a
syndicate with other bashful bettors. For those who can't make
the party, or who are just totally befuddled by the system, we
will be hawking raffle tickets that are guaranteed to get some
of you into the money. Pam Hedges and Jonathan Townes will be
running the show this year, and offers to help them are hereby
solicited.
The Point to Point is under new
management as Rick Roth goes into honorable retirement. Fritzi
Riahi and Dan Lincoln will run the show this year, with TBA
interning in preparation for next year's event. This year there
will be some fine tuning, but no major changes. The Race will go
to the swiftest and the Pace will go to the wisest. If you think
you have a fast trotter, you may have more room to prove it. We
are looking for suggestions of tests to prove mettle of the
Handy Hunter competition. Of course, the Hilltopper event will
be great for all ages. The Calcutta Prize list will be out in
mid-March, but block the date on your calendar and remind Old
Dobbin that the season does not end with the closing hunt.
